Karen Lincoln asked:

For a couple beginning the wedding planning process, the options for wedding theme ideas can be overwhelming. A wedding theme can be a fun reflection of the personalities of a couple or it can be elegant and classic. When selecting from wedding theme ideas, it is important to keep in mind the venue location, the guest list and the décor you wish to use to ensure a memorable celebration of your marriage. Whether a couple would like to have a unique theme or a traditional feel, there are many different options for wedding themes that can fit the personality of any couple.

Beach Themes

Beach themes can be both fun and elegant with the many décor and venue options that work well with a beach or ocean themed celebration. Classic ocean hues are excellent options for a color pallet. The use of sand, decorative shells, star fish and even live fish are fun ways to extend your theme. Taking your venue into consideration while choosing your décor is very important. If your wedding is in a traditional church, your beach theme is best carried out in your reception. If you have selected a seaside outdoor venue, playing off the already beautiful atmosphere can be enhanced by using paper lanterns, brightly colored flowers and shells or beach rocks to line your aisle.

Alma Mater

Thankfully for many college sweethearts, many more options for tactfully including your alma mater in your wedding day plans is becoming easier with more product options available. There are several classy options for adding a little piece of your history as a couple in to your special day. Consider not destroying the color pallet you’ve had in mind since day one of wedding planning by using alma mater colors at a minimum, such as an insignia of the schools name written in white on your cake or using the school song as your entry song to your reception.

Environmentally Friendly

Going green is no longer just a trend, it is becoming a requirement of some bride’s and grooms. When considering wedding theme ideas, going environmentally friendly can be a way of bringing the freshest, local food and flowers to your celebrations. You can also consider using recycled paper products when possible, especially with invitations and décor. The options for going green can make a statement or be an underlying intent by the couple. An additional benefit to going green is that at times there can be a cost benefit to the products you select by choosing environmentally conscious, local resources.

Color Themes

If you are known for a signature color, it can be a fun way to share your personality with your wedding party guests. Wedding theme ideas often generate color selections based on a color pallet preference of the bride or groom or both, but the color itself can be your theme. Having a customized drink for your guests with infrequently used colors of green or blue is a popular option. Swathing the wedding and reception site in fabrics, flowers and lights in your chosen color will set the theme for your day. However, depending on your color choice, you should be ready to compromise. If you are set on tinting the frosting of your cake in your signature pretty pink color, then a chocolate frosted grooms cake may be a great compromise.

When selecting from the long list of wedding theme ideas, it is important for it to be a collaborative decision. Much of the remaining decisions from a wedding planning perspective hinges on the theme choice, so this decision should be made carefully. Whether you are planning to go traditional with your wedding theme or you wish to show off your personality, there are many creative wedding theme ideas to choose from.

There are many prom themes ideas for your committee to choose. Deciding on a theme is one of the more important decisions your High School planning committee will make. Just keep in mind with prom themes there is room to add or subtract details. If you remember this, then you should easily be able to pick out prom themes ideas that a majority of the Junior Class students can agree on.

Prom Ideas

Are you trying to go for something out of the ordinary or keep it more relaxed? Your budget, resources, and creativity will establish the boundaries for any prom ideas. The budget can give you a sense of the location for the venue since these facilities will vary with price. If you are planning a Michigan prom, I recommend choosing a Michigan banquet hall on this list that is close in you area to reduce driving time (25 minutes or less). Some venues might make decorating more challenging, while others might spark your creative sense. The more resources your decorating committee has, the better. If you can make a majority of the decorations, or rent pieces at a discounted rate, this will save money and you will be able to allocate funds elsewhere. The disadvantage is that usually hand making decorations takes time and people. Usually this is feasible for high school prom themes that average 500 students.

Prom Themes

Now if you are brainstorming prom themes where the guest list is in excess of 1,000, then you will have to choose a bigger facility as well as one exceptional prom theme. Below are a couple of quick things to consider before we rattle off a list of prom themes ideas.

Are looking for something romantic?

Are you trying to match it with current trends?

Do you want something mysterious?

How much fun can you incorporate into the prom theme?

High School Prom Colors

There are many colors for you to choose from. You can either have them slightly offset, match your school colors, or have them be completely different. I recommend having your high school prom colors match the theme. This will give you dance more balance and keep things consistent with what students will be expecting. A couple of events based just on colors:

Black and White Ball Prom Theme

How to Choose a Prom Theme

Which one should you go with? Do you need more help with how to choose a prom theme? Well, it is important that you avoid doing the same prom theme two years in a row. Also you should check with local high schools to make sure that you do not accidentally duplicate their ideas (this might create bitter feelings). Make sure you prom theme is achievable with the banquet facility you have chosen, and that resources for decorating can be found easily. Also order a variety of prom catalogs to give you an idea of what you have to work with. Lastly hyping your high school prom is extremely important (this will help improve ticket sales). Make sure to play the song, and remind students of the theme with any school announcements/pep-rallies. Working with you budget is important for planning a high school prom dance, but you also have to give the students what they want. What is that…. a great send off for the seniors and something that makes your freshmen and sophomores anticipation next years’ prom!

One of the easiest ways to make a wedding memorable is to have a theme. Themes can be humorous, cultural, seasonal, venue-inspired or downright crazy but one thing they do is make your wedding unique and unforgettable. This is because although themes may be alike, each person’s interpretation of the theme is different.

When choosing a theme, you should consider two things; one is accessibility of resources and the other one is accessibility of materials. Accessibility of resources suggests the cost of implementing a theme. Having a castle wedding would probably require you to rent one and this is very expensive as well as it might require you to have your wedding in another place or country. Accessibility of material is referring to the decorating materials for your theme. A snow wedding in spring will require creating snow which is difficult and costly.

Here are a few examples of wedding themes:

- Seasonal themes - This is based on the four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. If an autumn wedding is chosen then decor such as maple leaves are used as well as honey and golden colors are used for other decors. Spring wedding would warrant lots of flowers. Sunset wedding also falls into this category as the wedding will be held during sunset especially the exchange of vows.

- Venue-inspired themes. This is the kind of wedding the uses the venue as the theme. Such themes are the beach wedding, castle wedding and garden wedding.

- Cultural themes. Themes based on cultural themes are quite popular too. This is especially true for cross-cultural marriages. It is even more interesting when mixed culture is showcased in these wedding. Examples of cultural themes are Indian wedding, Scottish wedding or Chinese wedding.

- Humorous themes - This is the theme that will bring out fun and humor for the wedding. It could be anything from fancy dress such as the Retro theme, The Seventies, Halloween, Medieval Times and The Wild West.

- Color themes. Color themed wedding can be interesting as it is up to one’s creativity to use the chose color or colors. Themes like Goth or psychedelic are derived from color theme wedding.

- Extreme weddings. Extereme weddings are gaining popularity these days and usually, those who do opt for them will make it in the news. These are the types of weddings that adventurous and outdoor type of couple would go for and examples of them are underwater weddings, bungee-jumping points or mid-air weddings.

The success of any chosen theme greatly depends on the creativity of the couples. You should make the theme come to life by using the right materials to create the accurate atmosphere. You must be willing to improvise to make things happen. For instance, if you can’t paint the walls of the venue, try using disposable wall paper. Be sure to seek permission from owner before you start any alteration.

To choose a wedding theme and to be able to carry it out with conviction is a great task. Therefore, it is always best to have a theme that is personal to you and your spouse. Some ways you can decide on the wedding theme you want is to look at your lifestyles, hobbies and backgrounds. The easiest way to choose wedding themes is from your hobbies - choosing your favorite sport, like golf or soccer, often ends up as a popular theme or your favorite leisure activities, like music or dancing.

Another popular theme wedding is one that is based on your careers. If both you and your spouse are in the financial sector, using a Money theme can be suitable while a Lounge theme is appropriate for couples who are in the media or entertainment industries. Otherwise, go totally different and have a theme wedding that has absolutely nothing to do with your careers.

If it is too difficult to merge two different careers, then pick a common interest - a love for cars, for instance, or a compulsion to travel.

The important thing is choosing wedding themes is that the themes must be meaningful to you. Theme weddings, after all, are an extension of the bridal couple’s lives.
