“The Tell-Tale Heart” is all about guilt and how it can affect us. The man belives that the heart of his victim is beating and only he can hear it, driving him to madness. “The Raven” is, also, about madness. The man talks out loud and the raven always responds with the word ‘Nevermore’. The man, beliving that the raven is talking to him, belives the bird and that drives him to madness.

being buried alive - “cask of amontillado” “berenice” “usher” “black cat” “premature burial”

death of beautiful woman - “berenice” “ligeia,” “morella,” “oval portrait,” “usher”

mental illness fall of the House of Usher,” “tell-tale heart”, “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether”)

The Masque of The Red Death shows the theme that nobody can ever run from death. Prince Prosperos name is a form of Verbal Irony, his name sounds like Prosper, but he does not prosper b/c he tried to run from the red death and cannot get away from death. Death comes naturally, and nobody can run from death, even in a castle where nothing comes in and nothing comes out.

search this short story, the theme is pretty obvious and there is great symbolism and imagery in this story.

Everyone has a good and an evil side. See William Wilson to begin with. Then go on to The Fall of the House of Usher and The Cask of Amontillado. Characters have dioopelgangers who often exemplify the other half of their personality.
